Spinach (Spinacia oleracea) is a leafy green flowering plant native to central and western Asia. It is of the order Caryophyllales, family Amaranthaceae, subfamily Chenopodioideae. Its leaves are a common edible vegetable consumed either fresh, or after storage using preservation techniques by canning. Spinach artichoke is sort of the dip to end all dips, and we come back to this recipe over and over again when we need our creamy, cheesy fix.
Instructions to make Fratta for da heart (spinach and turkey):
- Preheat oven 400°F
- Brown ground turkey on stovetop. After browned, add chopped onions.
- Once onions cooked down, add frozen spinach. Season to taste with salt pepper and Mrs. Dash. Other seasonings can be added to taste to substitute huge use of salt.
- Cover and let simmer until spinach has cooked with the turkey onion mix
- In a separate bowl, mix oat bran, egg white, and yogurt together. Should be a loose cookie consistancy. Place this mixture (crust) at the bottom of a greased 9" spring form pan. Spread it to cover entire bottom.
- Pour turkey spinach mixture into same spring form pan directly over oat bran mixture.
- Now layer the shredded cheese over turkey spinach mixture.
- In a different bowl, mix Eggbeaters, eggs, and 1/2&1/2. Though it can be mixed by hand, mixing with a electric beater will make this custard lighter. Add salt and pepper to taste into egg mixture
- Pour the egg mix over the cheese and spinach turkey mixture. Place in preheated oven and let cook for 45 minutes or until custard has firmly set.
You could also try upping the spinach and artichoke ratio: more veggies per bite = less cheese per bite = healthier dip! Mix together Parmesan cheese, spinach, and artichoke hearts. Combine remaining ingredients and mix with spinach mixture. Serve with crackers or toasted bread.
