  1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
  2. Arrange the tomatoes on a baking sheet pan, cut sides up, in a single layer. Drizzle with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Sprinkle some salt and pepper over the tomatoes. Roast for 25 to 30 minutes or until the skins are wrinkled and tomatoes are caramelized. Peel the tomatoes if desired.
  3. Meanwhile, heat the butter and the oil in a soup pot over medium-high heat. Add the chopped onion, season it with some salt and cook it for about 6-8 minutes or until the onion develops a golden brown color. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.
  4. Stir in the flour and cook, stirring, for 2 minutes. Pour in the broth, canned tomatoes and roasted tomatoes. Add paprika, dried rosemary leaves, stir and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat back to medium and simmer partially covered for about 30-35 minutes. Season your soup with salt, pepper and add some sugar to taste. Remove from the heat and allow it to cool.
  5. When the soup base is cool, transfer the mixture to a blender and puree until smooth. Using a sieve over a large bowl, strain the tomato puree if needed. Return the puree to the pot and reheat over medium heat.
